THE ACSOBA IS THE CUSTODIAN OF:
ACSOBA-Mr and Mrs Choo Hwee Lim Award (Badminton)
Mr Choo Hwee Lim’s coaching style and ethos, which focused on teamwork, physical fitness, perseverance and commitment to the overall team, is well remembered by former members of his badminton team. Coaching the badminton team from the mid-1970s, he instilled foundational values in the boys under his charge, and emphasised the giving of one’s best on and off the courts, to win with humility and to lose graciously. In honour of Mr Choo for his contributions to ACS and for shaping the lives of many ACSians, and in honour of Mrs Choo’s involvement and unwavering support to the badminton team, a group of former ACS badminton boys have set up the ACSOBA-Mr and Mrs Choo Hwee Lim Award.The award is open to school badminton players and one award will be offered to ACS (Barker Road) and another one award to ACS (I) each year. Nominations will be made by the principals of ACS (Barker Road) and ACS (I).
TW Hinch Scholarship
The TW Hinch Scholarship was first launched in 1968 by the ACSOBA with the objective of supporting ACS teachers with their professional development. The scholarship was set up in honour of Mr Thomas William Hinch, who was principal of ACS from 1929 to 1948. During his term of distinguished service, he sowed the seeds of a distinctive school tradition that allowed ACS to develop a special ethos that continues today. Mr Hinch initiated the use of our ACS motto, established the ACS House System and inculcated the importance of sportsmanship, emphasising that ‘we play our games for the pleasure and fun that we get out of them but the mental and moral lessons of sportsmanship and teamwork are not less valuable or secure because they are learned unconsciously’. Four TW Hinch Scholarships are available each year to provide travel support for ACS teachers attending overseas conferences. Applications can be made through the principals of the ACS schools.
